Introduction to the book - General Restoration Ecology

The General Restoration Ecology is divided into three parts on concepts and theory of restoration ecology, theory and practices of restoration of degraded ecosystems, and techniques and approaches to restore degraded ecosystems.

 Totally, it is composed of 30 chapters of 1.53m characters on the concepts of restoration ecology, characteristics and key causes of ecosystems degradation, ecological hazards of natural disasters, restored function of different parts of an ecosystem and plant strategies of restoration, mechanism and principles of ecosystem restoration, and how to monitor and research in and assess the processes of restoration. It describes the degradation characteristics and key causes of forest, grassland, desert, cropland, water body, abandoned and mining sites, city system and agro-pastoral transitional area, respectively too. The aims, principles and approaches to restore the above degraded ecosystems are introduced thoroughly.

 This book is of great values, theoretically and practically, to whom are engaged in researching and teaching in ecology, geology, environment science, hydrology, and the technicians and managers in ecological construction and environmental protection.

 This book is compiled by the research group of Naiman Desertification Research Station, Chinese Academy of Sciences. The chief editors are Halin Zhao, Xueyong Zhao and Tong Zhang. It is funded by the National Basic Research program- Research the processes of water, soil, climate and biological regimes of desertification, coded as 2009CB421303.
