January 11th , 2010,the scientific research achievements, “Vegetation Regulatory Mechanism to Sandy Soil Water Cycle, Key Technology and its Application in Arid Area” accomplished by Professor Li Xinrong’ research team from Shapotou desert research and experiment station, won the second prize of 2009 National Science and Technology Progress Award.

Based on scientific research platform of Shapotou Station, this achievement has been supported by the Major Program of the National Natural Science Fund, the 10th National Five-Year key programs for Science and Technology Development, International cooperation projects and some other funds and was a synthetic integration studies of eco-hydrology and restoration ecology of sand areas in the past decade, which focused on the core scientific issues of non-irrigated vegetation system water cycle in sandy area and revealed the response law between artificial sand-fixing vegetation and water cycle succession, and a theoretical model of vegetation restoration in arid sandy region was put forward, meanwhile, which were closely related to agriculture, forestry, stockbreeding and eco-environmental construction and restoration in sandy area of China especially in Ningxia, Inner Mongolia, Shaanxi and Gansu province. The techniques and models were widely applied in ecological restoration practices especially including major ecological project of arid sandy land in Ningxia, Inner Mongolia, Northern Shaanxi and Gansu, which generated enormous economic and social benefits.

Vice-chairman of NPC Standing Committee, CAS President Lu Yongxiang sent his congratulatory letter, and wish researchers to solve the basic, strategic, forward-looking major scientific and technological issues about the country's overall and long-term development, and strive to achieve more and better research achievements.

The prizewinning representatives received warm welcome at Yinchuan airport from chairman assistant Qu Dongyu and chief leaders of Scientific and Technological Agency of Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region. They hope that Shapotou Desert Research and Experiment Station could continue to be based on the Ningxia, facing the arid region to play the advantages of scientific and technological support to get more scientific research achievements, continue to serve the local ecological and socio-economic sustainable development.
