CAS Member CHENG Guodong is Honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award of International Permafrost Association

CAS Member CHENG Guodong was honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award of International Permafrost Association (IPA) in Portugal on 19th June, 2014.
IPA awarded Prof. CHENG to commend his outstanding contributions in the field of frozen soil science and engineering research.
The Chairman of IPA Prof. Antoni Lewkowicz gave a high evaluation to Prof. CHENG’s research. Prof. CHENG’s research fields included the process of periglacial, mountain permafrost and the formation mechanism of underground ice, particularly in the permafrost engineering research.
Prof. CHENG’s research provided the theoretical support for the construction of Qinghai-Xizang railway. He put forward a hypothesis about the repeated dephlegmation mechanism of underground ice, and he published more than 200 papers on many international academic journals.
Prof. CHENG also dedicated to the talent cultivation. Prof. Antoni Lewkowicz said that Prof. CHENG is an important person to lead China to the international top position in the field of frozen soil science and engineering.
It is reported that the Lifetime Achievement Award of International Permafrost Association was only awarded to three persons, respectively Prof. J. Ross Mackay (2010), Prof. Nikolai N. Romanovskii (2012) and Prof. CHENG Guodong (2014).
