Cryosphere Sciences Assist the 2022 Olympic Winter Games

2022 Olympic Winter Games will be held in Beijing. As global warming intensifies and extreme weather occurs frequently, sports fields of the Olympic Winter Games will be challenged. Therefore, CAS Member Qin Dahe leaded and activated an academician advisory program to support and guarantee the snow and ice conditions during the 2022 Olympic Winter Games. 

The joint conference between the academician advisory group and Beijing Organising Committee for the 2022 Olympic Winter Games was held on Jan. 16 in Beijing, and members with the academician advisory group and the Organising Committee investigated the sports fields of the 2022 Olympic Winter Games in Beijing and Zhangjiakou on Mar. 3 to 8. A workshop on the snow and ice conditions supporting was held on Mar. 8. 

In the workshop, NIEER’s scientist Kang Shichang, the director of the State Key Laboratory of Cryospheric Sciences, introduced the long-term monitoring to sports fields have been implementing, including the meteorological and UAV monitoring to physical characteristics of snow and ices in sports fields. 

Moreover, the State Key Laboratory of Cryospheric Sciences will strengthen the cooperation with the International Ski Federation, International Organising Committee for the Olympic Winter Games to ensure the high quality of the 2022 Olympic Winter Games.
