Lectures to Lanzhou
1. Mass balance change and climate
Abstract: The longest records of observed mass balance in Europe will be presented. They are winter, summer and annual mass balances observed on Storglaci鋜en, Storbreen, Glacier de Sarennes, Vernagtferner and Claridenfirn. The series on Claridenfirn starting in 1914/15 is the world longest continuous observation. During the last about 90 years the climate of Europe underwent a substantial change. The mass balance changes during this time will be analyzed with respect to heat balance climatology on glaciers.

2. Observed long-term variations of heat balance at the earth's surface
Abstract: During the last two decades considerable progress happened in the heat balance climatology. One direction of the progress was the improvement in accuracy. The other development was to try to understand the long-term change in heat balance. In this lecture a focus is given on the variation in solar radiation that took place in the last 80 years, when the radiation was observed. The variation in solar radiation can fill the gap between the greenhouse effect and temperature changes.

3. Social role of a university in a changing and globalizing world
Abstract: In many countries universities are experiencing a rapid change. If they are not yet changing, they will be forced to change soon. Not only the universities, but also our societies are changing. The speaker identifies the basic contributions universities are obliged to make for the society, and proposes what will be the best way for universities to operate in the 21st Century.
