The spilled crude oil could result in serious environmental and engineering problems in permafrost regions. The related reviews on migrating process, mechanisms and mathematic models, and influencing factors, which were presented by domestic and foreign researchers, have been made. Based on the research advance, and social and economic requirements in cold regions, in this research, some potential environmental and engineering problems were put forward and some related scientific vistas were opened for future research and expected to be progressively solved in coming decades. They include how the petroleum pollutants migrate in permafrost regions, how the permafrost influences the migration, what are the factors influencing the migration, what are the key driving forces, how the petroleum pollutants impact on the physical and mechanical properties of the pipeline foundation soils, what are the migrating models for the multi\|phase flow in frozen soils.
