Granite in Beishan area in Gansu Province has been selected as a candidate natural barrier for the Chinese high-level radioactive waste (HLRW) repository, and it will play a crucial role in permanently isolating the HLRW from the biosphere. Therefore, it makes sense to understand the sorption behaviors of typical radionuclides in granite.
As the important anions in the HLRW, the sorption behaviors of Se (VI) and Se (IV) on Beishan granite are important to the safe evaluation and performance assessment of the deep geological repository for the HLRW in China.
Recently, scientists from the Northwest Institute of Eco-Environment and Resources of Chinese Academy of Sciences investigated the sorption behaviors of Se (IV) and Se (VI) on Beishan granite under different environmental factors combining batch and spectroscopic approaches.
In this study, scientists investigated the comparative sorption behavior of Se (IV) and Se (VI) on Beishan granite surface, studied the influence of environmental factors on the sorption of Se (IV) and Se (VI), and explored the microscopic sorption mechanism of selenium sorption through spectroscopic methods.
The results showed that Se (IV) sorption on Beishan granite was much higher than that of Se (VI) mainly due to their molecule charge densities and speciation in solution. Competitive sorption results also implied that Se (IV) could be immobilized on the Beishan granite surface via different mechanism in the presence of different cations and anions.
The findings in this study would be favorable for the safety performance of geological repository, and this study has been published in the Journal of Molecular Liquids in an article entitled “Exploring sorption behaviors of Se(IV) and Se(VI) on Beishan granite: Batch, ATR-FTIR, and XPS investigations”.
